HID Joystick for moving heads and button selection question.

Post by MOK5 »

Hello DL5 Community

I have a client who wants to control specific moving heads using a joystick and have the ability to select the fixtures using buttons.
I am trying to wrap my head around this "ask" and how it can be elegantly or not so elegantly done.

Lets talk joystick, Can DL5 support a joystick and most importantly can it be used specifically for the pan and tilt grid?

Now lets talk fixture selection, can i make a hotkey for selecting a single fixture? Either the hotkey be made on the keyboard (HID), MIDI board, or in Touch?

Ok so now lets talk about putting it all together if both joystick and hotkey fixture selection is doable. If we can make a hotkey for fixture selection, how can i make sure the joystick will work for that single moving head selection? When i make that selection i want the joystick to work for pan and tilt for that selected fixture only.

Below is an image of the HID joystick i am thinking of getting and testing with. My plan was to have each button a different fixture selection and the joystick to work according to the selected. I know i can use touch and make a bunch of XYgrids for this and i have but clients want easier control.

Looking forward to any response.

Use software like vJoy or Joystick Gremlin to convert joystick input to MIDI/keyboard commands for DL5. Map buttons to select fixtures and link each to a unique XY grid or scene. Not plug-and-play, but definitely doable with some setup.
