Midi sometimes not working

Post by Stefan »

Hello,

I have an older show file, created with a prior version of DVC3 RC1. I installed the most current version of DVC3 from today. After mapping some channels to MIDI, everything is working perfectly.

When creating a very new show file with the current version, and just adding a generic CMY, then mapping to MIDI (MIDI channel gets detected when moving the MIDI board fader), but it is actually not working. Checked in 3D Sim and Moving Fader is activated, but the fader is not moving. Please note that the MIDI channel is recognized when mapping it.

Am I doing something wrong?

DVC3 without interface, Win 7 64-bit, KORG nanocontrol

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan

I can't reproduce this. Can you tell me step by step what you do, e.g. this is what I did...
-open DVC3
-patch cmy
-go to editor
-create new scene
-click CMY tab at the bottom
-select fixture
-right click at the bottom of the first fader and select MIDI
-move fader on console
-click ok

Hello,

- Connect MIDI board to PC
- Open DVC3
- Create a new show file
- in Setup, add the generic CMY (1 piece, it's the first available device in generic)
- Go directly to live tab
- Select fixture in group window
- Set first channel to MIDI
- Move fader on MIDI board, DVC3 recognizes that fader is moved and sets value to "0*0*68"; select OK
- We are back in live mode. Fader in DVC3 shows "MIDI" mode
- Move Fader on MIDI Board -> nothing happens (no moving fader, if you open 3D view, then as well the fixture is not reacting).

MIDI works well with DVC2. What I tried so far:
- Uninstalled DVC2 and DVC3
- Removed all remaining folders
- Removed everything out of registry that points to Daslight
- Rebooted PC
- Reinstalled July 27 version
- Run above test scenario; same issue
- Installed KORG driver bundle instead of Windows MIDI drivers
- Run above test scenario; issue remains

After all that, I now open my Test Show File, that I created with one of the Betas of DVC3, then I map the MIDI channel: And MIDI works perfectly. Fader is moving and lamps are reacting in 3D sim.

Configuration: Win 7 SP1 64-bit, no interface connected, KORG nanokontrol2

Thanks for your help,
Stefan

Hello,

I now reproduced it, it's fairly simple :-)

If you create a new show file, and NEVER generate a scene in it, but go directly from setup to live mode, then MIDI is not working properly (MIDI patch yes, live control no).

If you then generate only one scene, MIDI is working (even after you delete again the one and only scene). It's as well fixture/fixture type independent. It does not play any role, if the fixture(s) are really involved in the scene or not.

Stefan

OK I see. We'll have a look at that at some point, however I'm not sure why you would want a show with no scenes!

I don't understand what you mean

Does not really make sense to have a show without scences; so for me it's not an issue but it explains just why MIDI did not work when quickly mapping a fixture and just trying it.

In order to make MIDI work again in a blank show, you can define ANY scene with ANY fixture(s).
It does not play a role, if the fixture that you are trying to control with MIDI, is part of a scene or not.

Sometimes if you buy a new fixture you want to test it, so you patch the fixture, link the channels to for example a BCF-2000 and you can use the faders to test. No scenes...
