Updating Versions (Questions)

Post by DrFrankenSpine »

So, the last time I updated Daslight may have been when I moved from version 4 to 5. I think during this update I had to basically rebuild ALL my scenes. It was a colossal pain in the butt. I have been hesitant to update Daslight 5 because of this.

I am currently running Daslight 5.0.3 and I was thinking of updating to the latest version as I read that there had been some bug squashing done and I figured it would be best to have a program that had as few bugs as possible in it.

I wanted to know if Daslight has figured out a way to internally update... like how when you click update on some software and it updates the core program but doesn't change any of your scenes and such. I feel like most software does this so I was confused when Daslight didn't and I needed to spend an entire afternoon rebuilding the program's scenes.

I should add that a backup had been made but when moving from 4 to 5 I had to rebuild everything anyway since everything was so different (I guess?) between the versions. I just want this to be as painless as possible.

Can anyone fill me in on the current update process?

Thank you

Hello,

When updating Daslight versions, there should never be any need to rebuild your scenes at all- this isn't something that we have seen before either. We did also include backwards compatibility with Daslight 4 project so that they were openable in Daslight 5. Of course with the differences in software, there would have been some functions that need re-setting, but the scenes themselves should all be fine.

What I would recommend you to try for your peace of mind is:

1) Duplicate your project file
2) Install the latest Beta version via the links pinned in the top of this forum
3) Keep your existing version of 5.0.3 in a separate folder

Now you can test your project file in the latest version whilst keeping your original project safe, and in the worst case scenario- you also have the 5.0.3 version still installed if needed!

If you do notice anything strange when updating to the latest version, please do let us know so we can check this and try to investigate any issues.

Kind regards,
Will
