I often use DVC4 in the theater. I prepare all my scenes, but I am always forced to do the fade according to the pre selected tempo.

I would like to be able to assign scene change to an external midi controller fader and be able to do it manually instead.

Is it possible?

Have you tried using a MIDI mapping on the scene dimmer in LIVE view ? You should be able to create this mapping by right-clicking the scene dimmer as shown on this image :
