Best lights to use

Hi. I am doing a project for a friend and am using DVC2 which is finally working great! He wants a stage designed and a bunch of lights on it as a proposal. I have seen some great work on YouTube!
I was hoping someone could give me a basic rundown on what kinda lights a large rock concert stage should have, how many and which ones to avoid.
Also maybe tips on designing a stage. At this point every option is open, its just a proposal so any stage dimensions and lights are fine to use, as long as it looks impressive!
I was hoping to open a forum for people who have projects in Daslight that will never make it to the stage! So here it is.
I hope to hear some great tips to help me through this project.
