Use of faders without patching

In DVC 2 I was able to use the faders without patching any fixtures.
This was useful when using fixtures without known dmx setting. I could connect a fixture and move faders up and down and see the physical reacton on the fixture. Or maybe I would just have 6 spotlights for a presentation, rather than patch the spotlights by make and model I could just use faders 1 to 6 to operate the lights. Is it possible to use the faders in the same way in DVC 3.
