dashlight without crash - MAC or PC ?

Post by chrischris »

Hello, as I'm preparing a configuration for an entire concert with autonomous management of the light scenes, I'd like to have your feedback on anyone who have dashlight 5 crashes (latest realease) on mac and pc. I need to get a laptop, and I don't know which would be more reliable and without crashes. PC or mac?

My configuration is a bit special because I launch superscenes with a controller "AKAI apc key 25" .
all backing tracks are multi-tracked (4 separate tracks : bass, drums, synth and guitars) and run simultaneously with a DAW.
At first, I was very happy to be able to synchronize several audio tracks on dashlight, but it turns out that track synchronization is totally random and not operational : sometimes it's in sync, sometimes it's not. It would be great if the dashlight team could rework this part of the software.

I had a crash earlier on my mac mini, dashlight crashed and the music on reaper continued to play without crashing. What do I do if this happens to me live ????

In short, I'm due to buy a laptop in the next few days, and I'd like to know your opinion on the most reliable, crash-free configuration. PC vs MAC?

Thank you

Chris

I can't help you out when it comes to reliability on Mac, but Daslight 5 works great on PC for me! In two years of using Dashlight, it only crashed once. Sure, not perfect, but very close.

Okay, got to add one thing.
While Daslight appears to be solid on Windows AND Mac, Windows can come with problems.

Example:
A few weeks ago, I was setting up the lights while the other guys where still finalizing the truss.
Everything was working fine, so we lifted up the ground support. I than spent some more hours setting up all my scenes and left the venue.
When I arrived the next day, and booted up my light PC, I found out, that my laptop pulled Windows Updates in the background which got applied after rebooting. Those updates caused my MIDI controllers to stop working. The laptop simply refused to recognize them completely.
I later found out that one of the shipped updates included changes in the serial bus drivers ...
So long story short - I had to work with nothing but the laptops touch screen for the entire night/event.

So, while Daslight appears to be coded in a way which works absolutely fine on both Windows and Mac, Windows still has its problems. They might not be something Daslight has to worry about, but it can, and as proven by my own experience will, influence your setup one day.

So - If you have the choice ... Honestly I'd recommend Mac.

Cheers

I can't agree with that.
I've been using Windows since version 3.11 :)
And if I have a production machine running critical software, which DAW and lighting is, I have disabled strictly updates !!!
If your laptop is a general purpose machine for everything, you can't rely on third party updates ( which actually Windows system is :) )

So for me, using Windows is perfectly fine as long as you install and tweak it on it, then lock in updates and you have total peace of mind for a few decades.
