Akai APC Mini connecting to Daslight

I am having trouble connecting the APC Mini to Daslight software for use as a MIDI controller for DMX lighting. In the tutorial videos it shows that the software will recognize the MIDI automatically, however mine does not. I have no desire to use Ableton Live for music purposes, so I would like to be able to go without it on my computer, but I have installed it for now. Does Ableton Live have to be synched? Does Ableton have to be on at all? Is there a process I am missing to get the Daslight software to recognize the MIDI controller?

There is no APC IN/Out showing - how do I enable the device?

open daslight 4 under modify prefernce select midi and enable apc mini in & out

I am not getting the option to select the APC mini. That is the entire problem.

Matter of licencies for MIDI.
You need full licence on your interface to be able to use Midi

Sorry for the question. So is it not necessary to install the AKAI APC MINI software to make the midi interface work with daslight 4? or do I have to install Ableton live anyway?
