How to make movinghead lights do circle-like shapes

Post by mkleinbreteler »

Dear Daslight forum,

I've recently installed DVC4 gold and i noticed that when you create a "circle" shape in the shape generator, the moving head lights make a figure 8 movement instead of a circular movement. An other example is: if you choose a line-shape, the movinghead lights make the shape of half a circle. In other words: The moving heads do not make the same movements as shown in the generator. I also own MyDMX 2.0 which has a similar kind of generator, and there it works like i would expect.

Can someone tell me why this is, or how i can adjust it?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi, pick the points and make the circle smaller.
Hope that helps

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately the shape remains to be a figure 8, only smaller ;)

You can see what i mean here:

This is not my video by the way ;)

Ok I understand.
It is about the kinematic of MHs, remember the pan and tilt axis are limited.
To get a continuous movement the rotate direction has to been changed.
For your request you need a MH with unlimited pan axis.
If you don´t cross the centerline you will get a circle with conventional MHs (see picture below).

Thanks Thomas, you're right indeed, when the circle remains within a quadrant of the square, the movement stays circulair.
But it imidiately shows the ristrictions (i can only project the circle on the left or right wall of the visualizer). In MyDMX 2.0 this was never a problem, you could move the circle anywhere you wanted (across multiple quadrants) without becoming a figure 8 shape. (I don't know if i'm supposed to talk about MyDMX here on this forum, sorry if i ain't ;) )
Is this a "bug" in the software, or do you maybe know a work around? (maybe altering the SSL profile of the MH? (Showtec Phantom 50) Because i really like DVC4 over MyDMX, but this way of controlling the MH's really bothers me :(
The rest of DVC4 is awesome :)

Hi Mathieu,
sorry I can´t reproduce your problem, you can move the circle anywhere you want - but don´t cross the horizontal centerline.
It should work... you´ll get circles at each position in the 3D visualizer.
I did the same circle/same MH in ADJ MyDMX 2.0 and I made the same experience. ( I used MyDMX in 2014 and switched to DVC 4 in 2016).
Thats all I can do for you :(

Hi Thomas,

I guess that's it! Keep the circle away from the centerline! It seems to work!
You're right, it's the same with mydmx (checked it as well :) )
Thank you for your help en insight!

Regards, Mathieu
