DVC2 Software version

Why is it that the "new" versions of the software still say December 28 2007 even though its the "February" download.
as I am never sure if I have the latest version.
I think more than date is needed to tell if you have the latest version, a build number in the start-up splash screen would be very useful, but of course that would also need to be updated everytime you release a new version unless you are using a Change Management system.

Also could you please indicate if we should download and install the update as well, especially when the update is older than the main download.

Is the "beta" version really more advanced than the "main" download even though the date is older ?
