Link changing of colors to midi from drum kit

Hi,
I'd like to link the speed of changing the colors of a scene with an electronic drumkit from Roland (Td-9) through midi. The idea is that the lights follow the rythm of the drums.
I can make it work that the lights turn off and on, but i like it to go through the different colors scenes.
Here's what I do:
Under Live Mode I select the scene, I right click on it and then click on "Enable speed fader" and "Link speed with Midi". Then it asks for the Midi input. I then hit the snare, which sends value 38 on channel 9. Then I click OK.
The speed fader does not seem to change position at all.
How can I make the speed fader listen to the tempo of my drummer? I thought the snare hit would give a good indication of the tempo. Do I need something else to achieve this, what am I missing here?
