triggering scene with MIDI Note in Command

hi all, first post.
i have 36 RGB DMX lights.i have made scenes that mix the 3 colors of each lamp to glow in a certain color.
when i click these scenes with the mouse, they light up until i unclick the scene.
i set up the midi triggering to the corresponding scene. so a C3 is green. the D3 being blue.
what mode do i have to choose to get this to work with the MIDI in? i want to press the C key on the midi keyboard and have that light flash up for as long as i'm pressing it.
the midi watcher is clearly receiving the note commands on and off with velocity.
i just bought the dvc4 gold for this purpose but i can't get it to work.

i figured it out.. if i enter midi on = 1 it will take any velocity above that and light up the corresponding lamp.

so there's no way to make the lights light up more brightly when you hit the piano harder?
