Smooth fading following the beat

For really slow music I have created a scene, changing in two steps f.e. red to blue with a fading time of 5sec and a waiting time for 20sec. Triggering of manually pulse to fade.
But it seems that daslight make the next step, wether the waiting time is over or not, so the colour-change is much too fast.
What I want is a smooth and long fading while doing a beat after(!) the end of the waiting time.
Is this possible?
