How to get rid from heat? Does insulation works?

Now a days, I am finding solution for home heat. I have done a lot of study by visiting general house insulation FAQ and their answers from the experts but I want to listen some real stories regarding house insulations which actually works! I think as regulations are constantly changing and improving. For example insulation requirements for lofts have increased dramatically throughout the years. When insulating an older house the loft is the best place to start, due to the fact that heat rises. So is this enough to have insulation for only lofts for better heat resistance?
