Freestyler sucks. It's opaque, and generally crashed within 5 minutes of me starting to play with it.

When you drag a button on the virtual screen, it often turns the wrong colour if you've edited the colour on other buttons (only whilst dragging though)

The "Duplicate" menu option on buttons just creates a new button. No colour, text, or DVC commands are copied.

You can't use live mode key bindings when the virtual screen is active.

You're not going mad! When you are in live mode, the sliders behave differently - they allow you to make changes to running scenes. There is a mechanism that prevents these live edits "sticking" when you change to a new scene - if you look at the bottom of the sliders, you'll see something...
